What to Expect During Sedation Dentistry

Parents often wonder what happens before, during, and after sedation. Here’s a quick overview:

Before the Appointment: For oral, IV, or hospital sedation, children must not eat or drink after midnight before their visit. Parents will receive detailed preparation instructions. For nitrous oxide, no fasting is required.
During the Procedure: Your child will be monitored at all times by our dental team (and an anesthesiologist for hospital cases). Depending on the sedation type, your child may remain awake but relaxed, or fully asleep and unaware of the procedure. Local anesthetics may also be used to ensure comfort.
After the Appointment: Nitrous oxide wears off in minutes, and children can return to normal activities. Oral and IV sedation require supervision at home with limited activities. After hospital sedation, children will need close monitoring for the rest of the day before resuming normal routines.
